We used to keep bees, but sadly lost them 2 winters running, so we decided enough was enough.
Once, the bees swarmed on the orchard fence. It was quite spectacular - and also quite a job to get them back into the hive!

We have visits from Canada Geese in the winter. Sometimes, if a group arrives when here are already some here, it can get very noisy as they squabble amongst themselves!
Normally a pair nests on the island, but unfortunately they don't have much success raising the goslings because of predators. Once they have hatched the eggs, the geese do not go back onto the island and but stay on the bank, making the goslings that can't fly almost sitting targets for Mr Fox.
Once, something killed not only all the goslings, but the parents too. The Beast of Latchygors???
We are near enough to the coast not to be too bothered by snow in the winter, but when it does snow, it can be spectacular. In very cold weather, the ducks are rather put out to find that the lake had disappeared, but they soon settle to feeding on the ice for as long as the freeze lasts.
Each year, the holly bush behind the cottage is stripped bare, almost in a day, by gangs of Redwings and Mistle Thrushes. This activity was captured from inside the cottage by a very patient visitor, Dave Harrison, who had set up his tripod by the window. Thanks, Dave, for an amazing shot!
